Description | Ross Park was established in 1875, making it the oldest public park in the city of Binghamton, New York. The Historic Ross Park Loop Trail, a proposed network of pedestrian trails, will use the historic original entrance on Park Avenue as the trailhead and would provide access for public hiking, outdoor activities, and will enable visitors to experience the beautiful scenery Ross Park has to offer. The Historic Ross Park Loop Trail plan is divided into three areas The Historic Gate to Carousel Trail, Carousel to Trails, and Trails to Historic Gate (map attached). The completion of the Historic Gate to Carousel entrance includes the restoration of the gate and provides a critical connection for neighborhood residents to access other attractions in the park by foot. The Carousel to Trails area provides an attractive location for the carousel while creating designated pedestrian paths to help visitors navigate the parking lots. The Trails to Historic Gate area requires a land survey to determine the best location for a walking path along the Park Avenue side of Ross Park. New York State Historic Preservation Office must review and approve the Ross Park Recreational Trails plan. The design must retain the character and integrity of the original park and must be developed in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties (36 CFR Part 68) and, more specifically, the Standards for Restoration. Only plans approved by NYSHPO may continue to the development phase. |
