Description | This project would connect the Dakota Dunes trail system to the Sioux City Trail System with the construction and placement of a bike/pedestrian bridge located at Riverside Park. An effort to make this project a reality was undertaken in 2008. At that time, HR Green provided preliminary engineering on the project. Due to some resistance from South Dakota residents, the project did not move forward. As some time has passed and the importance of trails and quality of life initiatives continue to be in high demand, it seems appropriate to revisit the feasibility of this project. Subsequently, a public input meeting was conducted on September 15, 2021, regarding the construction of the proposed pedestrian bridge over the Big Sioux River. Nearly 100 people attended the meeting and provided their input regarding the locations that were presented. Tremendous support was expressed to more the project forward. Two major trail systems would be linked by building a bike/pedestrian bridge. The addition of the trail system would improve quality of life and economic growth for both states and cities. This project is included in the fy 2024-2028 Capital Improvement Program. As of May 31, 2023, further details regarding design completion and firm construction timelines have not been identified. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available. |
