Description

The Alabama Department of Youth Services (ADYS) Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU), Therapy Building, & Renovation of Wallace School is the construction of two new buildings and the renovation of one building, all located on the ADYS Mt. Meigs Campus, just East of Montgomery. Proposed ITU is a one-story 11,500 square foot dormitory building, Group I-3, Type IIB. Proposed Therapy is a one-story 15,300 square foot office building, Group B, Type IIB. The Wallace School is a one-story 26,600sf school building, Group E, Type IIB. The new building structures will be supported on reinforced concrete footings and concrete slab-on-grade. Exterior wall construction is brick veneer on load bearing concrete masonry units with storefront windows. Roof construction is architectural standing seam on rigid insulation on structural steel deck over open web steel joists. Exterior canopy construction is architectural standing seam metal on metal deck on glued-laminated wood beams supported by steel columns. Interior walls are painted concrete masonry unit construction. Storm sewer, sanitary waste and vent piping are DWV-PVC below the floor slab and will transition to hubless cast iron piping above the floor slab. Domestic water piping will be copper hard drawn tube with lead free soldered joints. Storage type water heaters will provide hot water to all fixtures through a fully re-circulating piping system. A fully automatic fire sprinkler system will be provided for each building. Buildings will be served by split system heat pumps. Outdoor heat pump units will serve associated indoor unit. Refrigerant piping system will be hard copper with wrought copper sweat fittings made with solder. Ductwork will be pressure class galvanized sheet metal duct with external duct wrap. Electrical services for the new ITU and Therapy building will be derived from pad mounted transformers. The existing service for the Wallace school is existing to remain. Emergency power for the ITU building will be provided by a new generator. Emergency power for Therapy and Wallace will be provided by a relocated generator currently on site. Facility will be equipped with programmable, energy efficient lighting, a fully addressable fire alarm system, voice data system, video monitoring and access control systems. Site work associated with the project includes demolition of several buildings and associated facilities, the removal of several trailers, grading to create building pads and provide positive drainage, construction of adjacent drives, fire access lane and vehicular drop off area and sidewalks. Utility relocations and new service connections are also included. The disturbed area is approximately 3.5 acres.
