Description | https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2021/10/29/brent-spence-reopening.html Oct 29, 2021 Traffic will be fully restored on the southbound Brent Spence Bridge lanes as the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet finishes its painting and maintenance project on that portion of the bridge. All four lanes on the upper, southbound deck are projected to be open by 6 a.m. Wednesday with traffic restored to its original configuration, weather permitting, according to the state. The state also will open the on-ramp to I-71 southbound from Third Street in downtown Cincinnati. Access to I-71 southbound from Fort Washington Way will remain closed. But things will get worse before they get better, with traffic delays expected as the state prepares the bridge to reopen. Kentucky will begin preparing for the opening with various lane closings on the bridge and in Ohio starting Saturday night at 10 p.m. and ending by Wednesday morning. The opening schedule for the northbound lanes will be announced next week. The routine maintenance and painting project began on March 1. More than 35,000 gallons of paint were used to cover more than 1.5 million square feet of surface area for the maintenance project. The bridge was painted gray in accordance with KYTC Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction. In addition to cleaning and painting, crews completed other routine maintenance tasks, including drainage work, signage repairs, and replacing interstate emblems on the roadway surface. "This work was detailed and tedious," said Bob Yeager, chief district engineer for Kentucky's District 6. "Our crews worked quickly and carefully to complete this project that is part of the normal lifecycle of a major structure like the Brent Spence BridgeInformation regarding planned traffic pattern changes is provided on the project website - BrentSpenceBridgeInfo.org. _________________________________________________________ Conceptual plans call for the replacement of an existing double-decker cantilever truss bridge. The bridge currently has eight lanes; four upper lanes and four lower lanes. Several miles of highway leading to and from the bridge are also part of the project. The southern limit of the project area is the interchange of I-75 and Dixie Highway (US-127/US-42/US-25) in Kentucky (exit 188). The northern limit of the project is the interchange of I-75 and the Western Hills Viaduct in Ohio (exit 2B). After construction is complete, both of these exits and the span of highway between them would be reconfigured and updated to accommodate new traffic patterns leading to the bridge. As of August 2 2021, this project is on hold in conceptual stages. There's no planned movement until future government action regarding infrastructure bills take place. A timeline for construction is not known. |
