Description | Officials at Pittsburgh International Airport celebrated the groundbreaking of what will someday amount to the facility's largest cargo facility to date — Cargo 4 — though even that claim will likely be short-lived as the airport eyes yet another and even larger facility in the years to come amid growing cargo demand. https://www.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/news/2022/09/09/pit-airport-breaks-ground-on-cargo-4-facility.html Upon its completion in 2024, the 77,000-square-foot facility, located in the northwest side of the airfield, will drastically increase PIT's ability to serve the global air cargo supply chain, a role it has taken on with more gusto since the pandemic's onset amid congestion at some of the country's more popular airports for cargo like those in New York and Chicago. The Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA), which manages PIT, predicts the new facility alone could generate $229 million in annual economic impact for the region. PIT also maintains several other cargo facilities, the likes of which serve carriers like FedEx Corp., United Parcel Service Inc., and Amazon.com Inc.'s cargo subsidiary Amazon Air, among others. Additionally, the ACAA approved the entering of a ground lease agreement with Aeroterm Inc. in February 2022 to construct a 140,000-square-foot cargo facility in the coming years, almost double the size of Cargo 4. _________________________________________________________ https://www.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/news/2022/07/26/pittsburgh-international-airport-taxiway-upgrade.html Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is set to receive $3,259,045 in federal funding to extend one of its taxiways to a future cargo facility. Specifically, the funding grant will be used by PIT to extend Taxiway A so it can then access the new Cargo 4 facility, which is set to open in 2024. The grant covers 75% of the $4.3 million project total needed to extend the taxiway. Work on the taxiway's extension is expected to begin within the next two months. Airport operations are not to be affected by the project. "Cargo continues to be a key initiative for Pittsburgh International Airport and we look forward to expanding our cargo facilities to meet the growing demand. PIT is an ideal international gateway, offering an uncongested, speedy alternative to major air hubs," Vince Gastgeb, senior vice president of corporate and government relations at PIT, said in a prepared statement. "I'd like to thank our federal partners for recognizing the importance of a global logistical hub and supporting this strategic project." "Pittsburgh International Airport is a major hub that connects Southwestern Pennsylvania to the rest of the world," U.S. Sen Bob Casey said in a prepared statement. "This funding will allow PIT to make a much-needed extension to a taxiway so passengers and goods can keep moving through our airport." In February, the board of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, which manages PIT, approved an authorization request to enter into a ground lease agreement with Aeroterm Inc., a leading owner and provider of capital, expertise and facility-related services to airports in North America. Aeroterm intends to construct a 140,000-square-foot cargo facility on up to 8.77 acres of land along Wright Brothers Drive. Upon its completion, the facility will become the airport's largest cargo building on its property. Year-to-date, PIT's cargo operations are up 2.6% compared to 2021. As of June 2022, PIT has moved 110.4 million points of cargo so far this year, compared with the 107.6 million pounds it saw over the same time period last year. ___________________ Plans call for construction of a new 75,000-square-foot cargo processing facility at Pittsburgh International Airport as part of its BUILD grant program. As of August 25, 2021, the Pittsburg International Airport will receive partial funding through PennDot Aviation Transportation Assistance Program. It is currently unknown to when design completion and firm construction timeline will be disclosed. *Project information, including timeline and contacts, has been obtained through public sources.
