Description | These requirements include a variety rehabilitation and reconstruction projects for seawalls, generally described as walls or embankments erected to prevent the sea from encroaching on or eroding land areas. Reconstruction of the East and West Potomac Seawalls project will evaluate and design the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the historic seawalls bounded by the Potomac River starting at the Memorial Bridge continuing south around Hains Point and continuing north along the Washington Channel. Reconstruction of the Tidal Basin Seawalls will design the rehabilitation and reconstruction for two sections of the historic seawalls adjacent to the Inlet Bridge. The first section will be couple hundred feet north of the inlet bridge, and the second section will go from the Inlet Bridge to the front of the Jefferson Memorial. Both the East and West Potomac and the Tidal Basin Seawalls will look at rehabilitation and reconstruction of the seawalls and related surrounding infrastructure. The actual seawalls will be reconstructed to meet the requirements for protecting East and West Potomac Parks and Tidal Basin while meeting the requirements of park visitation and evaluating the changes during high tides in the future. Improvements to the surrounding infrastructure may include pedestrian/multi-use paths, seawall barriers for pedestrians, and improvements to the surrounding landscape. All pedestrian areas will be required to meet current Accessibility Code Requirements. There is the potential for possible utility conflicts that will be evaluated during design. Due to the changes in elevations, drainage and storm water management will be evaluated, and the potential for wetland delineation and mitigation exist as part of this project. East and West Potomac and Tidal Basin seawalls are located within the boundaries of the National Mall and Memorial Parks (NAMA) in Washington D.C. |
